A Message from our President & CEO

As I write this letter, snow is falling outside, and I’m reminded of its beauty. In the cold drabness of winter, it brightens up our world and offers hope. This ray of hope can lift us, giving us patience and letting us know (if subtly) that something good is around the corner.

However, it’s hard to tell that to the many who are continuing to struggle; those who are battling illness, financial stress, or loneliness. At CFAAC, we are committed to being that hope for many of our nonprofits and the people they serve. To do that, we will continue providing support to those affected by COVID-19 through our Community Crisis Response Fund.  

We will also open Fund For Anne Arundel Grant applications on February 15th, our focus remains on Healthy, Thriving, and Successful Children with a refined concentration on the physical, mental, and emotional health of Anne Arundel County children. We are grateful to the many donors who have contributed generously to this fund allowing CFAAC to make strategically impactful grants. We are dedicated to growing the Fund for Anne Arundel in order to support generations of children in perpetuity. Please consider making a gift and offering hope for our county’s future.

Building on our commitment to children, this year's Community Impact Speaker Series programs and events will examine the topic of ACES (Adverse Childhood Experiences) and the pandemic. Our first program had more than 300 people register! On January 27, Dr. Pamela Brown, Executive Director of the Partnership for Children, Youth and Families led us in a thought-provoking and informative program, “ACES, Trauma and the Pandemic: Becoming a Trauma Informed County.” Stay tuned for future ACES seminars.

CFAAC’s commitment remains strong for 2021 as we respond to the ever changing needs of the community. Although we exceeded our strategic goal of $20 million in assets by 2020, our focus has shifted to building our endowment and a permanent base of philanthropic dollars to secure our future in the community. We also remain committed to supporting and developing strong, effective local nonprofits distributing 830 grants totaling $4,803,726 last year.

CFAAC announces the upcoming retirement of Taylor Milbradt, our wonderful Director of Finance and Operations,who will be finishing her tenure with the Community Foundation at the end of March 2021.

Taylor has served as a vital member of CFAAC's team since 2010 and can be credited with helping to shepherd our success and growth for over a decade.  Taylor has worked with passion, commitment, and professionalism throughout these many years, and on behalf of the staff and Board of Trustees, I offer our sincere gratitude to her for all she has helped us accomplish, together. We wish Taylor all the best and we thank her for her commitment to CFAAC and Anne Arundel County. We wouldn't be where we are today without her significant contributions.

2021 Herzberg-Wild Memorial Scholarship - Applications open February 15

The Lance Corporal Eric William Herzberg and Lance Corporal William Taylor Wild IV Scholarship (Herzberg-Wild Scholarship) was established at CFAAC by anonymous donors to honor two fallen Marines, Eric W. Herzberg and Taylor Wild IV, who were both Anne Arundel County residents. Both were proud U.S. Marines who dedicated their lives to protecting and defending our country.  

Since 2014, scholarships have been awarded annually to graduating Anne Arundel County Public High School students who exhibit the Marine Corps values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment; the ability to persist in the face of significant personal obstacles; and the ability to provide quiet leadership in their school and in their community.

Scholarship recipients are eligible for reapplication for one consecutive year pending successful academic progress. Eligible education expenses include tuition, fees, books, equipment and/or tools associated with a specific academic or trades training program.

Two $10,000 Herzberg-Wild Scholarships will be awarded in 2021 to graduating Anne Arundel County Public High School students. Completed applications must be submitted by April 2, 2021.

First Community Impact Speaker Series on ACES a Success

More than 300 people signed up and attended CFAAC’s first Community Impact Speaker Series programs of 2021, “ACES, Trauma and the Pandemic: Becoming a Trauma Informed County,” in January. The program featuring Dr. Pamela Brown, Executive Director of the Partnership for Children, Youth and Families, was designed to provide attendees with insight into Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES), often created by economic distress, poverty, and racism, and occurring before the age of 18 years, as a major public health problem in the county, state, and nation. The one-hour virtual interaction helped participants understand the impact of ACES and shared new research related to ACES and the pandemic. STRENGTHENING NONPROFITS

Community Crisis Response Fund Grant Application

As we enter 2021, the COVID-19 pandemic continues. To remain stable and strong, nonprofits are shifting from a mindset of crisis response to resilience and recovery.  While the priority giving areas covered by this grant have been expanded, requests for funding must directly relate to increased needs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For this phase of grant making, grants will be awarded to nonprofit organizations that provide human services and emergency assistance, as well as health/mental health and educational resources. Examples include (but are not limited to) food, shelter, transportation, living expenses, and rent/utility assistance. Also included will be funding for advocacy and/or community organizing projects focused on improving systems for food security, violence prevention, medical care access (including, but not limited to, transportation to and from vaccination sites), childcare, and education.

CFAAC will award grants between $2,500 and $20,000. Applications will be open from February 8, 2021 through March 12, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. Note: the application does require a narrative description, and program and operating budgets.

Fund for Anne Arundel Grant Application

The Fund for Anne Arundel will continue its focus on healthy, thriving, successful children, by awarding grants to programs that address the needs of children and families. There are tremendous unmet needs that remain consistent in Anne Arundel County as outlined in the CFAAC Community Needs Assessment, Poverty Amidst Plenty VI: On the Road to Progress for All. The Fund for Anne Arundel was established to align with the findings of the needs assessment report, and to offer flexible and dynamic support to nonprofits doing vital work to address the most pressing needs of Anne Arundel County residents.

In 2021, the Fund for Anne Arundel will make grants to programs that prioritize the health of children and families. This includes access to physical, mental, and behavioral health programs.

The Fund for Anne Arundel will award three to five 12-month grants between $25,000 and $50,000. Grant applications open on February 15, 2021, and close on April 15, 2021 at 11:59 p.m.

2021 Chaney Enterprises Foundation Fund Grant Application 

The 2021 Chaney Enterprises Foundation Fund grant application timeline is as follows:

Cycle 1 – grant applications open from February 1 through March 30; awards made in May.  PLEASE NOTE: This cycle is open to nonprofits located and serving populations primarily outside of Anne Arundel County.

Cycle 2 – grant applications open from July 1 through August 30; awards made in October.

County Executive Community Support Grants

The County Executive Support Grant applications are now open. Due to limited funding, the following types of projects/programs are encouraged: (1) Operating Costs that allow nonprofit organizations to increase their impact and operate more efficiently and effectively to improve and enrich the lives of Anne Arundel County residents and communities. (2) One-time equipment purchases required for effective program delivery. Applications are available online now and all must be submitted by February 19, 2021. To apply for a grant visit www.aacounty.org. 

Grants Available from Parole Rotary Club

The Rotary Club of Parole (Annapolis) Foundation is receiving grant applicants from now until March 19, 2021 for nonprofit organizations in Anne Arundel County that serve the needs of children in the areas of education, health, and the arts. To apply for a grant visit www.parole-rotary.org.

Back to basics: Retirement plans and life insurance can fuel meaningful bequests

Your client’s fund at the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County (CFAAC) can be an ideal recipient of estate gifts through a will or trust, or through a beneficiary designation on a qualified retirement plan or life insurance policy. 

Bequests of qualified retirement plans can be extremely tax-efficient because charitable organizations such as CFAAC are tax-exempt. This means the funds flowing directly to a client’s fund at the Community Foundation from a retirement plan after the client’s death will not be reduced by income tax. This also means the assets will not be subject to estate tax. Read more...

Red hot real estate: Structure smart gifts to charity without getting burned

The housing market is showing no signs of slowing down in 2021. For certain clients, this presents an opportunity for charitable gifts of real estate, whether a primary residence, second home, rental property, or even niche commercial property that’s benefited from a multi-faceted pandemic marketplace.

As is the case with gifts of other long-term capital gains assets, gifts of real estate to a nonprofit can be extremely tax-efficient. Whether your client is contributing a second home, rental property, or commercial property to a fund at the Community Foundation, the client may be eligible for a charitable tax deduction of the fair market value of the property. Because CFAAC is a public nonprofit, when the property is sold, the full amount of the proceeds will remain in the fund – and not subject to income tax. Read more...
