Rates of incarceration have risen dramatically since 1980, both nationally and in Maryland. As the number of incarcerated adults increase, so do the number of children and families impacted by the effects. It is estimated that on any given day, approximately 90,000 children in Maryland have a parent under some form of correctional supervision – parole, probation, jail, or prison. The impact on families is traumatic. Research shows that communities with higher rates of incarceration have high unemployment, low incomes, high rates of public assistance participation, low educational attainment, high rates of student drop outs, and lower life expectancy. When incarcerated adults are released and re-enter communities and the workforce, they face multiple barriers, which further impact their families, as they attempt to move forward and rebuild their lives.
Come and learn about strategies being used to assist children and families impacted by incarceration, an understanding of current reentry programs in Maryland for offenders who are released from prison or jail, the issues that face individuals who are integrating back into society, and the effects on the entire community. Be part of a conversation that fosters understanding and identifies gaps in the services former inmates and their families face in our communities. This event is presented by the Community Action Agency of Anne Arundel County.
